  2. Happy New Year to you, too, Mark. It is interesting to speculate who first received that card 100 or so years ago, and how much luck it brought them, as your wishes will surely do for us.

    1. Hi, Jim.

I often look at my ephemera collection and reflect on the society of that time, especially since so many of the images that I post were exchanged between friends and loved ones. I find the collection poignant; while the times were in many ways harsher, they were also in many ways more innocent.

Thank you for your kind sentiment, and for all of your comments, which help to sustain this blogger!

  3. Happy New Year to you Mark, and looking forward to more interesting posts from you in 2014.
Thank goodness we do not send out New Year Greetings cards now, I cannot imagine sitting down and writing even more cards following on from Christmas.

    1. Happy New Year, Rosemary!

I noticed this year that more and more of my friends are sending e-mailed Christmas cards. It makes me wonder whether the Christmas card will go the way of the Yule Log!

  4. Is that a trade card or just a greeting card? You've got the best stuff.

    Happy New Year, Mark.

    1. Happy New Year, Steve!

The image in this posting is an engraving a little larger than a business card. Its size makes me believe that it was probably hand-deliviered. (I'm glad you like the stuff I collect!)

  6. Yesterday was bit of a lost one, with several Lazarus re-enactments, but none of them very convincing. The result of a very good party until the wee small hours. Today, back at the gym, (the pool's still too cold), and raring to go. You too I hope. All the very best for a happy and healthy 2014.

    1. Dear Columnist,

I also wish you the best for 2014 (and that Thailand will experience peace and a more unified vision). I stayed up until 2:00 a.m., but I have to admit that I consumed more cheese than bubbly!
