Back From New Orleans

Dear Blogging Friends,

I'm back from a week in New Orleans! I still have unpacking, laundry, photo-sorting and a backlog of comments to attend to, but until my next posting, here's a view of where I was staying. You're looking at a New Orleans home that's been made from two "shotgun" houses — the symmetrical arrangement of windows, doors and fireplace mantels are all that's left to remind one that this actually started out as two long, narrow apartments. I'll have interesting impressions of "The Big Easy" to share with you soon!

  1. Hello Mark:
Welcome back! We think that the house in which you stayed looks very attractive indeed. Quite the home from home! We look forward to reading more of your adventures.

  2. Glad you have had a good trip Mark - the apartment looks a really nice place to stay with the sun's rays shinning through the shutters.

  5. Looks like a very cozy home to stay in. I LOVE those floor to ceiling windows with the shutters standing in front of them. The way the light shines through is beautiful! Can't wait to hear more about New Orleans.

  7. Hi, one and all!

My home away from home had a lot of character, and was mostly furnished with local New Orleans art. My next posting will give a sense of the great use of color in New Orleans, so stay tuned.

Stefan, there'll be an architectural posting coming up for you.

Gina, I made two trips to Cafe Du Monde, and had six huge beignets. I'm actually glad I don't live any closer to New Orleans; I could imagine getting quite rotund!

  9. Hi, Yvette - Yes, it's also so nice to have a home base when you're in an unfamiliar city.

  10. OMG OMG OMG that yellow/gold is nearly EXACTLY what I pictured that I should put in my dining room. Is there any chance you could track down/ask about what the paint colour is? I'd be eternally grateful.

And what a gorgeous place. I love the tall doorways with the transoms, and the rather understated white-painted fireplaces. The brick wall is also what really "makes" the room though.

  11. Hi, JC -

The gold walls of the photographs are actually a rich brown. They do come across as you see them, in part because there's a lot of light flooding in, and in part because the walls are expansive and 12-15 feet high. These rooms would appear much darker and browner were they smaller and the lighting not as direct.

I will do my best to get a color name for you ...

  12. Thanks Mark. If anything I can always just use a similar shade, or a lighter version of the same (or a very close) colour. At the very least I've saved the photo, and I can try and experiment with a colour match/samples. But the photos have confirmed an idea I've been musing over for about 2 months.

  13. Hi again, JC - I'm pretty good at judging and remembering colors, and I'll definitely get you some color swatches. (I buy so much house paint at Sherwin Williams that I'm known there by name!)

I remember sitting on the sofa off to the left side of the first photograph and making a mental note that the wall color was the perfect match to the antique gold frame surrounding that mirror.

  14. I did some research for JC, and suggested that he look at Behr 260F-7D, Sherwin Williams SW6118, or Glidden GLY27. The closest is probably Glidden.
